Puppy Program and Education
We have also seen students increase in their ability to focus when they begin caring for a dog. One student was struggling with his academics and behavior, when he received a dog he began to make marked improvement not only in his behaviors but his grades as well. The dog handlers are responsible to care for the animals 24-7 which is a very large responsibility. The dogs actually accompany the students to class every day. With the dog lying at the students feet both student and dog are comforted to know each other is there. The student is responsible to see that the dog has a bathroom break just like he or she has to take a break. There are also times each day for the dog to go outside and run and play with the students.
We are excited about the positive influence a dog can have in the life of a troubled teen. There are relatively few programs today that are utilizing the calming influence of a dog. Our experience has shown that a dog can actually decelerate a potentially volatile situation. We have also found that when a teen begins to care for, nurture, and train a dog they are more teachable. The dog can also be used as leverage when the teen does not make appropriate choices. When the teen realizes that he can lose his privileges to work with the dog he often times begins to make better decisions.
